Read Before Your Session
Want amazing senior photos? Preparation matters. Please take a few minutes to read everything below before your session. The tips and recommendations in this guide are designed to help you look and feel your best, which makes a huge difference in your final photos. While we do professionally edit all images, Photoshop can't completely change things like outfit choices, hair, makeup, or overall preparation. The best photos happen when you arrive feeling confident, prepared, and camera-ready. Trust us — spending a little time preparing now will make your session smoother, more fun, and help you get the absolute best results possible.
1. Makeup
Your makeup is your face card, and it plays a major role in how your final images will look. If you are planning to wear makeup for your shoot, we strongly recommend trusting a professional makeup artist, just like you would for prom or any other important event. We often see situations where foundation is mismatched or not blended properly, which can result in an uneven or orange tone on camera. Keep in mind that high-resolution cameras capture every detail, so any unevenness or asymmetry in makeup will be much more noticeable in photos. For the best results, we highly recommend having your makeup done professionally to ensure a polished, natural, and camera-ready look
2. Hair
Hair is just as important as makeup when it comes to your senior session. Please make sure your hair is clean, fresh, and completely free of any oil or greasiness, even minimal. If you’re unsure how to style your hair, it feels flat, dry, or damaged, a professional blowout before your shoot is the best option. It will give your hair volume, polish, and a camera-ready finish. If you need help with more advanced hair concerns such as uneven color, at-home dye corrections, or general hair repair, we recommend Olga from House of Hebe Salon in Bellevue, WA. She is known for correcting hair issues and helping clients achieve healthy, beautiful results. For styling, soft light waves are the most recommended option because they photograph beautifully and tend to hold up best throughout the session. You can also wear your hair straight, but keep in mind it may become frizzy or bend in unexpected ways during the shoot.
3. Tan
Getting a tan is not a necessity, but it can add a beautiful, natural glow to your skin that photographs really well. If you choose to tan, we recommend getting a professional spray tan to ensure an even, natural-looking result without streaks or discoloration. If you decide to do it at home, please be aware that it may not apply evenly, and any uneven areas can be noticeable in your final images.
4. Outfits
Outfits are everything — they can truly make or break your senior session. The right outfits should flatter your body shape, photograph beautifully, and match your chosen location. Because of this, we ask that you send us photos of each outfit while you’re wearing it so we can approve them ahead of time and help you avoid any last-minute surprises, such as realizing something doesn’t fit the way you expected or doesn’t work well on camera. We highly recommend investing in high-quality, well-designed pieces that are thoughtfully made and pay attention to detail. If you need guidance, please refer to our outfit guide for inspiration and support. Please also make sure all clothing is clean, wrinkle-free, and fully ironed before your session. Be mindful that outfits can wrinkle during transport, so plan accordingly. Some locations may have bathrooms available for changing, but in many cases, you will need to change in your car. If that is uncomfortable for you, we will provide a portable changing tent, but we will need you to bring someone to carry it. Please change as efficiently as possible, as your session time is reserved and limited.
5. Accessories
Shoes are just as important as your outfits! Please choose footwear that complements your look and matches your outfit and location. You may wear sandals, heels, or very clean sneakers. Your shoes should be in excellent condition and look almost new — we are not able to Photoshop away scuffs, dirt, or heavy wear. Bras are also very important for a clean, polished look. Please make sure you wear a strapless bra if needed, and that no bra straps or undergarments are visible at any point. While adhesive options can work, they may not always provide enough support or the most flattering shape. Jewelry should be kept light and minimal, so it enhances your outfit without overpowering it. Gold is preferred, though silver is also completely fine. Avoid pieces that are overly bulky, distracting, or extremely colorful, as they can take attention away from you and your overall look.
5. What to bring with you
To help your session go as smoothly as possible, please bring:
Brush or comb
Hairspray and bobby pins
Makeup touch-up kit
Extra outfit(s), if needed
Flip-flops or sandals for walking between locations
Water bottle
Mirror (optional, but helpful)
Fresh manicure and pedicure (your hands and feet may be visible in photos)
Pro Tip: Get a good night's sleep before your session! Being well-rested helps you look refreshed, feel confident, and have the energy needed for an amazing shoot.
